Register for VAT, sell and store stock in any country you choose
Frequently asked questions
When is it mandatory to apply for a VAT number in another EU country?
It is mandatory to register for VAT in an EU country in two cases: if you physically store stock in that territory (such as in Amazon FBA warehouses) or if your distance sales across the EU exceed the €10,000 threshold and you do not use the One-Stop Shop (OSS) system.
What is the One-Stop Shop (OSS) and how does it benefit an e-commerce business?
The One-Stop Shop (OSS) is a simplified scheme that allows eCommerce sellers to declare and pay VAT on all their sales to end consumers in the EU through a single quarterly return in their country of residence. This avoids having to register individually in each country where they do not hold stock.
How long does each country’s tax authority actually take to issue my VAT number?
It depends on the country. In Spain or Italy, it can take up to 4 weeks; in France, 4 to 8 weeks; and in the U.S. or Japan it can take up to 3 months. At Muay Tax, we speed up the process by submitting all the required documentation from day one.
What’s the difference between a VAT number and an EORI number?
The VAT number is used to declare and pay sales tax (VAT) in a specific country, while the EORI number is a mandatory customs identifier for importing or exporting goods outside the European Union. If you’re a seller bringing goods from China to a European warehouse, you’ll need both.
If I already have a US LLC, do I need a VAT number to sell in Europe?
Yes — US LLCs selling products to customers in the European Union must register for VAT if they are the importer of record or if they use warehouses within Europe. There is no minimum sales threshold for businesses not established in the EU, so registration is often required from the very first sale.
